• The 2021 flashpoint: a leading platform's brief announcement that it would ban explicit content — driven by payment-processor and banking pressure, then reversed — became the industry's clearest lesson in who really holds power (the banks, not the platform);
• Discoverability & consolidation: as with all creator economies, a minority of creators capture most income, and platform algorithms and marketing determine who's seen;
• Labour questions follow the model — independence brings both freedom and precarity (labour).

Why it matters beyond adult

The adult industry repeatedly pioneers digital-business models later adopted by the mainstream — streaming, online payment, affiliate marketing, live monetisation. The creator-direct shift is a case study the whole platform economy learns from, whether it admits it or not (and AI is next).

Platform categories today

• Subscription-creator platforms: the dominant format — direct-to-fan recurring billing, pay-per-view messaging and tipping bundled into one account, the model that defined the last several years of the sector (business models);
• Cam and live-interactive sites: real-time, token- and tip-driven performance that predates and helped shape the subscription era;
• Clip stores and content marketplaces: per-item sales for creators who want a lower-commitment alternative to subscriptions;

The economics for individual creators

• Marketing becomes unpaid labour: creators who once relied on a studio's distribution now do their own social-media growth, community management and customer service — real, uncompensated work layered onto production itself;
• Income concentration: as in creator economies generally, a small share of creators is widely understood to capture a large share of platform earnings, while most earn modestly — a well-documented pattern across gig and creator platforms, not unique to adult content;
• Algorithmic discovery: visibility increasingly depends on platform recommendation systems and search/tagging behaviour rather than a studio's marketing budget, handing platforms significant influence over who succeeds;
• Diversification as risk management: many creators now spread income across several platforms and formats specifically to reduce dependence on any single one — a direct, rational response to the deplatforming risk described above.
